High Noon, Sunday 19th April. This was the date and time that the Under 14 girls were to begin their play in the League. The team comprises of six members, Molly Crawford, Katie Lowry, Sinead Flanigan, Ellen Gorman, Aine Rice and our newest recruit Amelia Burns.
With Katie away for family commitments and Amelia sitting out this first match, the remaining four were prepared for their battle against Ballycastle. We had the benefit of playing at home and the girls were fired up and eager to commence. After the meet and greet with the Ballycastle girls, 4 singles matches got under way on a pleasant, warm day. The girls played with enthusiasm and some excellent rallies were exchanged much to the delight of the small group gathered to watch.
The girls won 3 out of 4 singles matches and this lifted their spirits as could be seen by the smiling faces. After some much needed juice and fruit they came out eager to conquer in the doubles. This was the first time the girls played together in their pairs and after a few games, really started to gell, communicating well and working on their strengths. They won one doubles match and lost the other. However overall, the Newcastle girls won the match, the result 4-2. This was a superb start to their quest and the girls are ready for their next match on Sunday 26th.
Well done to the girls and many thanks to the parents who helped with the food and in entertaining our visitors. The Ballycastle girls and their driver Roisin were a pleasure to have at our courts and as they prepared to head for home, they were receiving advice on the best place to stop for ice cream. This is always an important factor after a hard match!
