Under 14 Newcastle girls in Belfast

Posted on: July 10th, 2015 by admin

On a balmy evening on 23rd June 2015, the Under 14 Newcastle girls headed off to CIYMS Belfast for an important match. The team of Molly Crawford, Katie Lowry, Sinead Flanigan and Ellen Gorman were the runners up in Division 2 and so were to play the winners of Division 1 for a place for the trophy. It was always going to be a tough match but the girls were fired up and ready to play their best.

At CIYMS, the task proved too much. Play was hard and the girls were kept on their toes. They played some excellent shots and took many games to deuce but the CIYMS team showed why they were the winners of Division 1. Newcastle had one great win by Katie Lowry who excelled herself in winning her match, defeating an opponent who was much older and bigger. Well done to Katie and hard luck to the other girls who have all played in this tournament with great enthusiasm and have improved considerably as a team.

A big thank you to John Lowry for taking the girls to the match, for putting up with the singing and chat and treating them to burgers on the way home.

Under 14 Boys A team successful season

Posted on: June 30th, 2015 by admin

The Under 14 Boys’ A team this week had a truly great achievement.  Having won their division in the Belfast & District Leagues, the boys qualified for the Juvenile Challenge Trophy.  They played and won the quarter final, with relative ease. The semi-final, played at home, was a battle royal. Donaghadee A team were the visitors, and they came, they saw, but they did not conquer! The Newcastle boys worked and worked and worked, and though the matches were long and competitive and fiercely fought, the local lads pulled through in the end, winning 5-1. The visiting team was really friendly, several of the players on both teams renewed acquaintances from previous matches, and very hungry, they all had a great supper together before the Donaghadee boys took to the road, leaving the Newcastle boys happy, and very excited to have made it the final, something that has eluded the junior teams for quite a number of years.

That was Wednesday 24th. The boys practised like mad in advance of their final fixture, which took place on Saturday 27th June, away at ATT Club, near Ballymena. Gabriel Corrigan, Jack Cunningham, Ben McGuigan and Ciaran Flanigan went off on Saturday morning, with nothing to lose and everything to gain. They were up against an extremely strong side, winners of the 2nd division, two full divisions above their level. Gabriel and Jack were outclassed in their doubles match, and again in their singles.  Ben and Ciaran had a very tight doubles match, losing narrowly 6-5, despite coming back from 2-4 down., Ben lost his singles, but Ciaran, the youngest competitor on the court, won his singles match, which is just a tremendous result and the Club is very proud of him, and indeed of all the Juniors who have worked so hard for their teams this season. Well done to them all.

Under 14 Girls

Molly Crawford, Katie Lowry, Sinead Flanigan, Ellen Gorman, Aine Rice and Amelia Burns, have represented the Club in an exemplary manner at all times this season. They have played extremely well in every fixture, and were very narrowly pipped at the post, coming an excellent second in Division 2 by a tiny margin.  For the first time in a very long time, the Club has an Under 14 Girls’ team which has now qualified for a chance to lift the Juvenile Challenge Trophy. The Challenge Matches are conducted during the last week of June, so good luck, girls!

Under 14 Boys

Under 14 Boys’ A Team qualified for the Challenge Trophy by winning Division 4 and played the first match on the 14th June, winning it in style. Gabriel Corrigan, Jack Cunningham, Ben McGuigan, Ciaran Flanigan, Cormac Burns and Joseph Roseingrave have all been excellent ambassadors for the Club. The team now proceeds to the next level during the last week of June, hosting as yet unknown opponents. If the boys win this match, they will enter the final, which is tremendous progress indeed.

Under 18 Boys

The Under 18 Boys also qualified for the Challenge Trophy by winning Division 5. This qualified them for the Challenge Matches.  They went to Larne on Saturday 20th June to play against the runners-up of Division 3. Gabriel Corrigan, Matthew Dougherty, Michael Flanigan and Aaron McAnulty were keen to get stuck in. Their opponents were much older, taller and stronger, and although in some parts it was all one way traffic, still the Newcastle boys worked hard and were pleased with their efforts against a much better side. Gabriel and Matthew had some flashes of brilliance, though ultimately dominated by the superior Larne boys. In particular, Michael Flanigan was in fine form and played a blinder in two fantastic matches, besting his opponent 8-3 in singles, and also coming through the doubles unscathed with his partner Aaron McAnulty. An overall loss of 4-2 means they are out of the Challenge matches, but should be proud of themselves for getting this far.

Seniors / Division 7 Mixed League

This week saw some great successes for the Newcastle Tennis Club. The Mixed League A Team has won Division 7. This team is captained by Brendan O’Connor and comprises Kay Speedy, Jane McIlwrath, Hazel Carder, Wendy Laffin, Ryan Speedy, Eugene McGuigan and James Moore.  The team played consistently well over seven fixtures, with Hazel and James being notably successful in playing in every fixture and winning all their matches. This means that the team qualifies for play-off matches in an effort to bring home the League Challenge Cup, currently held by Windsor C team.  Play-offs are held in the last week of June, so watch this space!

Division 4 Men’s Evergreens

Also covering itself in glory was the Men’s Evergreens team. This team has out-stripped every other team in the Division comfortably, and won by a hefty margin. Trevor Long played in every match and didn’t drop a set, Eugene played 5 out of 6 matches, also not dropping a set. Paddy Dornan, John Lowry and captain Stephen Brown played in most of the matches dropping a set or two along the way. Brothers Johnny and Pierre Burns also played, winning one of their matches. Overall the Newcastle men won all 6 fixtures, and won 21 out of 24 matches played, , a comprehensive victory. Captain Stephen Brown was hoping for a whitewash, and he got one! Well done.

Women’s Evergreens

A Team

This team has won 4, drawn 2 and lost 1 of their matches and is therefore likely to finish in the upper end of their division. Captained by Wendy Laffin, and ably supported by Hazel Carder, Patricia Stewart, Dolores Dornan, Liz Brown, Joan Moore and kay Speedy, the Ladies have done very well. Friday 19th saw them at their final Evergreen match away at the Belfast Boat Club, where two of their matches went to tiebreaks and were taken by the Newcastle team, letting them win the fixture 3-1.Captain Wendy Laffin said she was very happy with a good squad and grateful to everyone who played, especially if they had to travel.

B team

Friday 19th June saw the final fixture for the Ladies Evergreen B Team. Having played 6 fixtures already, drawn 4 and lost 2, the girls decided there was nothing to lose, and all to gain, and started off in high spirits, hoping to come through. However, this week’s opponents were the Civil Service Team, currently sitting unassailably at the top of the division.  And unassailable they proved to be. Kay and Gabrielle won one of their two matches, the only one to be gained all evening.  The Civil Service team had years of experience and a beautiful capacity to just place the ball exactly where their opponents (try as they might) were unable to reach it. They won convincingly and are now the winners of Division 3. Everyone shared a delicious supper at the Clubhouse before the two teams parted company. Captain Rachel Corrigan would like to thank all the team members for all their hard work, and all the great food they supplied this season. Supper over, the B team girls hightailed it round to O’Hare’s to meet some of their fellow Evergreeners, for a well-deserved end of league social evening. All agreed that their tennis has improved by playing in the leagues: win, lose or draw, you always learn something new by playing with different people, and the opportunities to meet other Clubs and play tennis are well worth the effort.

C Team

The C Team Ladies had an easy night of it on Friday, socialising in O’Hare’s because they had a bye that week.  This new tean did not win any fixtures, but that didn’t spoil the fun, and all who played have gained massively in experience and confidence and are already thinking and planning for next year. Well done to everyone involved, and to Captain Danielle Gorman whose first outing as captain has been very well handled indeed.

Boys Teams’ match reports

IMG_8715[1] IMG_8717[1]Also representing the Club this weekend were the U14 B Boys’ team.  Captain Joel McKibbin, Conaill Burns, Reuben McKibbin, and Philip George all travelled to Belfast, hosted by Windsor Lawn Tennis Club. Arriving in plenty of time, the boys had a chance to warm up and get used to the different bounce on these courts, and to get settled down for this last match of the season.

Joel and Conaill had a very tight doubles match, losing out in the end 6-5. Reuben and Philip had a very impressive doubles win of 11-0.

The 4 singles matches proved long and very close affairs, and the spectators were treated to some very entertaining shots and a nail-biting finish. Neither side was prepared to give in and both Clubs parted company with 3 matches each overall. This is a very respectable draw for the U14 B Boys, who are a new team this year and doing really well. Captain Joel gave a very polished speech, and Newcastle Tennis Club can be very proud of the tone set by these boys who are unfailingly fair, polite and good-humoured. They are great ambassadors for the Club.

Ladies Teams’ match reports

The Ladies Evergreen A and C teams were pleased that the weather stayed fair enough to permit play after the original fixtures had had to be postponed from the previous week due to very inclement conditions.

Luck held for the A team, and a very strong Newcastle side – Wendy Laffin (captain), Hazel Carder, Patricia Stewart and Dolores Dornan – very efficiently won all four matches, giving their Bangor opponents no real chances to fight back.

Unfortunately, ‘Lady Luck’ did not shine on the Newcastle C team as they succumbed to the stronger Belfast Boat Club team.

However, this new team is playing very happily together, and the girls are having great fun while gaining valuable match experience. The matches were played in very good spirit and there were some fine shots scored by the home team .The final score did not reflect the closeness of the games, as many games went to deuce. The team was comprised of Sinead Kearney (this week’s captain), Emma Hallissey, Carol Crilly and Karen Lockhart.

Both The A & C teams had prepared a delicious supper, and this part of the evening always gives the Club a chance to socialise and strengthen bonds with affiliated clubs, and to catch up and have a good laugh with opponents old and new.

Under 14 Girls’ success at Cloughey

Posted on: May 12th, 2015 by admin

U14 girls May 2015Newcastle Under 14 girls played their first away match on Saturday 9th May 2015. The destination was Cloughey Tennis Club. So bright and early on Saturday morning the team of Molly Crawford, Sinead Flanigan, Ellen Gorman and Amelia Burns set off. After a windy journey on the Strangford/Portaferry crossing, we reached our destination slightly earlier than the 11am fixture. Due to coaching at Cloughey, the girls were unable to warm up immediately so an improvised exercise routine was carried out on Cloughey Beach and sand dunes.

Eventually the matches got under way, with doubles being played first. Both pairings played well together and Newcastle won both matches. The girls were feeling buoyant if a little windswept. The singles matches commenced with Molly and Sinead playing first. The sun came through and the girls played well with some excellent shots executed. Both girls won so the pressure was now on Ellen and Amelia. They both stepped up to the mark, playing confidently and hitting the ball with gusto. Again, both girls won their singles so Newcastle came away very happy with a score of 6-0.

Cloughey Tennis Club provided much needed refreshments and juice. The camaraderie between both teams was great and some amusing tales were told. A big thank you to Cloughey for their hospitality and home baked goodies!

The journey home was chatty until larger than expected ice creams were purchased. Some quiet time ensued. Well done to the girls who represented the club in a very sporting manner.

Friday night saw the continuation of the Evergreen Leagues.  Men’s Evergreens and Ladies B team played at home, Ladies A and C teams played away.

The Newcastle Men’s Evergreen team hosted Cavehill at the Bryansford Road courts, with Eugene McGuigan, Trevor Long, Stephen Brown and John Lowry turning out for the home team. The north Belfast team had journeyed a long way though for little to show for their travels.

Doubles team Long and McGuigan saw off the opposition in straightforward fashion with 6-2, 6-1 victory, while on the other court, Lowry and Brown wasted little more time in delivering a 6-1, 6-3 win. With teams switching for the second half of the fixture, Long and McGuigan seemed to be in a hurry somewhere, delivering another ‘double doughnut’ 6-0, 6-0 scoreline, for which the pairing is now becoming famous and such a feared opposition the length and breadth of Belfast and District Lawn Tennis Leagues Division 4. Not to be outdone (well, only marginally), Brown and Lowry hit the Cavehill men for six with a 6-1, 6-0 win, ensuring a 4-0 victory overall for Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Ladies A team – Hazel Carder, Joan Moore, Liz Brown and Dolores Dornan – travelled to Dromore Leisure centre to play against Downshire C.  After a close-fought match, Newcastle came home with a 2-2 draw.

Newcastle Ladies B team stayed at home, hosting Hilden from Lisburn.  Kay Speedy, Gabrielle Burns, Rachel Corrigan and Janet Flanigan played for Newcastle.  Kay’s and Gabrielle’s first match was very exciting; they lost the first set 6-7 in a tie break, took the second set 6-3, and then won the nail-biting champion tie break 11-9.  Their second match produced some great tennis too, and they won 6-1, 6-1. Rachel and Janet didn’t fare so well, losing 6-4, 6-3 in the first match and 6-1, 6-2 in the second, but all four matches were played in a great spirit of camaraderie and fun, with good banter across the net and lots of laughs.  A delicious supper and a few good-will speeches later, the teams parted company, agreeing to meet up after the leagues to play friendlies. Thanks to the Hilden Ladies for such a pleasant evening and also for contributing so kindly to the 24hr marathon, both in time on court and money donated.

Ladies C team had a long trip to Ballycastle for their fixture. Captain Danielle Gorman and her crew – Carol Crilly, Mary McConville, and Karen Lockhart – headed off late on Friday afternoon. They had a beautiful evening in Ballycastle and really enjoyed their matches. Mary and Carol paired up and both their matches went to tie-breaks, and they lost one and won the other. Danielle and Karen took a while to warm up, but came back in the second set from 0-4 down winning five games in succession.  This was Karen’s first ever League match and she really stepped up her game with some excellent rallies and winning points at the net. Unfortunately, Ballycastle showed their greater experience and won the set 8-6.  Overall score was 3-1 to Ballycastle who were great hosts and gave Newcastle some great games.

In the mixed leagues, Newcastle headed for a wet and cold Civil Service club in east Belfast on Monday last in their latest Division 7 fixture. In the opening games, Kay and Ryan Speedy scored a 6-3, 6-1 win, while Jane McIlwrath and Eugene McGuigan lost a tight match 7-5, 1-6, 10-5. Hazel Carder and James Moore won their pairing in another tight match as did Joan Moore and Stephen Brown, leaving Newcastle 3-1 up at the half-way mark. Joan Moore and Stephen Brown secured a draw in their second pairing, while Ryan Speedy and Eugene McGuigan narrowly lost a three-set nail-biter to their Civil Service opposition. With weather conditions worsening, and inadequate floodlights, the final two matches went unplayed; with those points evenly divided, the Newcastle delegation returned home with a 5 ½ – 2 ½ victory to add to their league total.

The only Juniors to play this weekend were Under 14A Boys team.  Hosting CIYMS B team from Belfast, the boys took to the courts on Sunday 3rd May (during the only dry patch of the day) in a very relaxed, friendly fashion, and commenced their two doubles matches. Newcastle boys Gabriel Corrigan, Jack Cunningham, Ciaran Flanigan and Joseph Roseingrave came out on top, showing their greater experience by winning both matches fairly comfortably.  CIYMS B is a fairly new team and in the process of gaining match experience. It was clear that next year, these boys will pose a greater threat to the Newcastle team, showing some lovely shots, and most of all, the ability to enjoy the game and stay positive even when losing matches.  Their good humour and sportsmanship was very commendable. Well done to CIYMS B, and well done to Newcastle, winning 6-0 overall.

Match reports: girls, boys & seniors

Under 14 Boys A teamU14 Boys B TeamUnder 14 Girls

Sunday, 26th April saw the second fixture on the Under 14 girls schedule – another home match.  The team for the match against CIYMS Bs was Katie Lowry, Sinead Flanigan, Aine Rice and Amelia Burns.

Luckily the rain stayed away and the girls commenced play.   Spurred on by the success the previous week, the Newcastle team was in fine form and eager to do battle.    The singles matches were closely fought and in the bright sunshine the girls had some superb rallies – fighting hard to win their points.   All four girls were focussed on their games.  Katie had not played last week but she more than made up for it by smashing her match.   Sinead and Aine once again played superbly and hit some stunning winners.  Our newest recruit, Amelia Burns, made an impressive debut appearance winning in style.

After a short break for fruit and juice, the girls were once again on court.  The doubles set off to a flying start with both teams working well together and playing some great rallies.   The two teams were unbeatable and helped secure a victory for Newcastle.  The overall result was 5-1 to Newcastle.

The girls were extremely welcoming and courteous to their guests. Both teams enjoyed pizzas and other treats in the clubhouse.  A big ‘thank you’ to Janet, Gabrielle, Julieann and John for their support and providing the refreshments.

Under 14 Boys

This weekend saw the continuation of the Belfast & District Leagues. Under 14 A Boys (Gabriel Corrigan, Ben McGuigan, Ciaran Flanigan and Cormac Burns) hosted the Ballycastle B team. Conditions were good, and both teams played some great tennis. Newcastle were delighted with their well-deserved win of 5-1. Ballycastle a strong team, and a pleasure to welcome to our Club.

The competition continued in the afternoon, as Under 14 B Boys (Conaill Burns, Reuben McKibbin, Philip George, Luka Hallissey) faced  a team from Lurgan. The boys played brilliantly, unfortunately with Lurgan coming out on top. A really great afternoon of tennis was enjoyed, and with all the Newcastle boys gaining more valuable competition experience.

Ladies’ Evergreens took to the courts home and away on Friday night. The new C team (comprising of Danielle Gorman (team captain), Carol Crilly, Sinead Kearney and Emma Hallissey) hit the road and went to David Lloyd in Belfast, where they were sheltered from the weather but not from their opponents!  They lost but played in good spirits, and enjoyed the craic anyway.  Better luck next time, girls!

The B team were also travelling, hosted by Cavehill in Belfast. Gabrielle Burns, Jutta McNaulty, Janet Flanigan and Mary Flanigan got together for the first time as a team. The weather was atrocious and everyone got VERY wet.  Hardy and determined however, both teams played on. Cavehill won overall, but Gabrielle and Jutta fought very hard and took their first match in a tie-break finish 6-4, 7-6.  Good games, good food, and good laughs were had by all.

The Ladies’ A team played at home, hosting Downshire B. The team players were Hazel Carder, Joan Moore, Kay Speedy and Dolores Dornan. The Ladies played well but fortune shone on their opponents this time, and the Ladies conceded after Downshire took 3 of the 4 matches. Supper in the Clubhouse was served as usual, and next week sees the A and C teams travelling, the Men’s team and Ladies B playing at home.

Newcastle Men’s Evergreens team hosted visitors Cloughey in Division 4 of the Belfast and District Leagues.

The Mourne men came out on top for the second year running, winning by a margin of 3-1. This included a “double doughnut” victory of 6-0, 6-0 by Newcastle’s Eugene McGuigan and Trevor Long over their doubles opponents.

On the other court Newcastle’s Stephen Brown and John Lowry narrowly lost in tie-break to their Cloughey pairing.

With a change in opponents for the second part of the evening’s competition, McGuigan and Long secured a 6-3, 6-2 win, while Lowry and Brown scored an equally convincing 6-1, 6-2 success.

The victory followed another win in Thursday’s nights match of the Newcastle A team in the mixed league against Lurgan.

In short, a great start to the competition season for the Bryansford Road racquet-wielders.
