Newcastle Tennis Club Juniors started League matches this weekend. The Club is entering three Junior teams this year, U18 Boys, U18 Girls and U14 Boys. Each team performed really well last year and all have risen to the 2nd Division in their respective competitions, showing that hard work pays off. On Saturday afternoon the U14 Boys (Captain Luke Crawford, Oscar Burns, Gicomo Ballocchi and Harry Nelson) travelled to Belfast to meet their opponents, CIYMS. Beautiful weather prevailed for a great day of tennis, giving this young team some good experience. Very kindly hosted by CIYMS, who won the fixture, the boys came home happy that they had worked hard, and determined to keep up the good effort for the rest of the season.
A sunny Saturday 21st April saw the opening match for Newcastle U18 Girls. The team members were Captain Molly Crawford, Sinead Flanigan, Anna Torrens and Emma Roseingrave. The visiting team from Downshire Tennis Club arrived promptly and the girls proceeded to play singles and doubles. The matches were tightly contested and after the first three matches, Newcastle was leading 2-1. After a slight break to rehydrate, play resumed and this time Downshire were ahead 2-1. The draw in matches of 3-3 meant that the number of games won overall would decide the winner. The final score was Newcastle 34, Downshire 32. A well-deserved feast awaited the girls in the Clubhouse and great camaraderie and chit-chat ensued. All games were played in a sporting manner and the good weather assisted in making it an enjoyable day. Well done to the girls for a great start to the season.
On Sunday afternoon in somewhat changeable conditions, the U18 Boys hosted their opponents, also from Downshire. Captain Gabriel Corrigan, Michael Flanigan, Ciaran Flanigan, and Joseph Roseingrave started off well in their campaign to defend their fantastic win last year, which they achieved along with team mates Aaron McAnulty and Fintan Hayes. All six boys played consistently and with great dedication to their team, and came out on top of their Division, and they then went on to win the overall Challenge Trophy. The four who played on Sunday this week got off to a great start and won all six matches comfortably.
There is a busy month ahead for the Juniors with four weeks of fixtures, but they are all looking forward to it.
Senior teams are also gearing up for the Mixed League and Evergreen League, both of which start over the next fortnight and finish in June. Good luck to all those competing over the next few months.
Thanks go to all the volunteers who support these teams either in hosting or travelling.
