Newcastle success at Ulster Junior Tennis Open‏

Saturday 25th July, and six of Newcastle Tennis Club Juniors set off to the opening day of the Clubworld Travel Ulster Junior Open at the Boat Club in Belfast.

Michael, Sinead and Ciaran Flanigan, Gabriel Corrigan, Jack Cunningham and Aaron McAnulty all entered a number of events and spent the week eating, sleeping, playing, winning, losing and watching tennis, soaking up the atmosphere and generally having a great time.

Collectively they entered eleven different draws and did extremely well.

Jack Cunningham entered the U14 Singles Novice and won it in great style, and he and doubles partner Aaron McAnulty played several matches in U18 Doubles Novice competition and made it to the 2nd round.

Gabriel Corrigan achieved the Quarter finals of the U14 doubles Main draw with partner Cameron Beattie, losing to the first seeds. Gabriel and Michael Flanigan entered the U18 doubles Main draw event and though they lost in the first round, they then went on to win the plate competition. Michael was also a finalist in the plate competition for U18 Singles Novice.

Sinead Flanigan entered the U12 Girls Novices, lost in the first round but performed extremely well in the plate competition, coming out victoriously in the final.

Ciaran Flanigan had a similar experience in the U12 Boys Main draw, losing in the first round but winning the plate final and impressing anyone who saw him play with some spectacular shots and some very long, nail-bitingly exciting matches.   All of the Juniors acquitted themselves very well both on and off the court, and represented their Club with great pride.

Thanks go to the Boat Club as hosts, they did an excellent job in terms of organising the competition itself but also in organising lots of fun things to do for players (and parents and siblings of players!) while they were hanging around waiting to play, with bingo, quizzes, air hockey, table tennis, table football and football all on offer, keeping everyone happy. It was a fun week which gave the Newcastle Juniors some very valuable experiences and some great memories, and they are already talking about next year. Well done to all involved.
