The Club is planning to run some Doubles Competitions for Seniors very soon, in a format called Box Leagues.
All those wishing to participate are split up into small groups of 4 or 5 pairs of equal skill level, who will compete amongst themselves over a period of a few weeks. This small group of players is called a “box” because the scores are recorded in a grid-like box format. The winning team in a box generally moves up to a more challenging box for the next round of the League, while the losing one moves down to an easier box. New players are inserted at an appropriate level. There will hopefully be several rounds of matches throughout the year.
Players of all levels are welcome and will be separated accordingly. For those members that take part in our League teams this is a great way to try out a different partnership or even just to keep yourself sharp in between competitions! It also has the added benefit for members to meet others that they might not normally come across at Club sessions. This format gives you the chance to be competitive to the very end, and even the losers get points for playing! Hopefully we get a great turnout.
If interested, please respond to this email  by next Monday 20th August, stating your partner, or your request for a partner if you don’t have one. We will have more information soon once all entries are in!

This year we have decided to hold the Annual Club BBQ and Finals’ Day on Saturday rather than Friday evening as we have done in the past. This is to allow more members to attend. The BBQ will be held during the day rather than in the evening, allowing any younger children who have participated in the morning events to stay on and attend with their families.

All members are welcome at the Club BBQ, even if they are not involved in the tournament. This is a Club social event, and as such it is a great opportunity for new members to meet and get to know other Club members. So even if you’ve never been before, or if you’re feeling shy about it, just come anyway. The food is good, the craic is great, and you’re very likely to meet someone you already know anyway!!

Anyone who can offer some time to help co-ordinate and run the BBQ, please let the Committee know by email to this address as soon as possible. We also need people who are willing to umpire matches in the latter stages of the event, please let us know if you are willing to help in this way. Thank you.

Check the Calendar and court booking system for court usage from Monday 20th August through to Saturday 25th August. 3 courts will be in use from 12-6pm daily Monday 20th to Friday 24th August. 4 courts will be in use from 9-11am on Saturday 25th, and 3 courts in use from 11am-6pm on Saturday, with the 4th court available for Council hire. The Tournament matches will be held during the day, leaving the evenings free for Seniors, and Club Plays will not be disturbed by anything other than Senior Summer League matches, on Tuesday 21st and on Wednesday 22nd.

The Tournament is expected to be very busy, so please check the court booking system at before coming to the courts, and book a court to avoid disappointment. (If anyone would like to register for the court booking system, please contact Rachel by text on 07591 762061).

Good Luck to everyone who enters!

Great achievement for the U18 boys and the U18 girls this week!

Posted on: May 21st, 2018 by admin

This week, the Senior Evergreen teams were on a break, although the Mixed League teams were busy with home matches. The A team played at home on Monday night, hosting opponents from the Boat Club in Belfast. The weather was great, the matches were tight, with some being decided on tie-breaks, always a less than satisfactory way of deciding a match. The visiting team took the fixture in the end, and were rewarded with a well-prepared supper.

The Mixed League B team were also at home this week, hosting Bangor. Although the team was full of beans before the match, and some great tennis was played, and the weather was very kind, the fates were not, and Newcastle lost convincingly. Undaunted, they are ready for the next match, again, at home, hosting players from Donaghadee. Good luck to all.

The U14 boys should have been hosting Ballycastle for their final match, but this has been postponed to next week. The U18 Girls had a very exciting fixture against visitors from Banbridge. Molly Crawford, Sinead Flanigan, Anna Torrens and Anna Shiel welcomed their visitors on a gorgeous sunny Saturday. Anna Shiel deserves a particular mention this week as she stepped in on extremely short notice for a fellow team mate who was unwell. This team is a great bunch of girls who continually support each other throughout the year in training and this rapport comes through very strongly in match season. After all six matches against Banbridge were played, it was difficult to say which way the land lay, as both teams had taken three each. This meant that the total number of games won came into play, and the home girls were delighted to see they were in the winning position at 36 games to 30. The matches were fun to watch, and played in a really friendly atmosphere, followed by a delicious lunch.

The U18 boys travelled to Warrenpoint on Sunday morning for their fifth and final fixture. The team this week was Gabriel Corrigan, Michael Flanigan, Ciaran Flanigan and Luke Crawford. Ciaran is a seasoned U18 player even though he is still an U14, and Luke did a fantastic job this year, stepping up from the U14 team for the first time to help out the U18s, and winning matches all over the place. In the warm up session at the beginning it was clear that all eight boys were evenly matched and that spectators were in for a treat. With an unfortunate change in the weather from cloudy to windy and wet, the fixture was really tight. Newcastle won 4-2 overall. It is a testament to how closely fought the matches were however, when it became apparent that even though Newcastle won the matches tally, the total games won were exactly even at 33-all. Newcastle U18 boys have won all of their matches, and therefore their division. Having entered the 2nd Division this year after winning Division 4 and the Challenge Trophy last year, these boys have performed brilliantly throughout, and now qualify for defending the Challenge Trophy title. Play offs are in June. Good luck to all involved.

Match updates – U14 and U18 boys, U18 girls and senior leagues

Posted on: May 15th, 2018 by admin

This week saw the penultimate matches for U14 and U18 Boys. The U 14 Boys (Ciaran Flanigan, Luke Crawford, Daniel Shiel and Oscar Burns) had a fantastic win last week against Belfast’s Hawarden, taking 5 out of 6 available matches, but this week was not quite as successful. This week’s team (Daniel Shiel, Oscar Burns, Giacomo Ballocchi and Harry Nelson) drove all the way to Coleraine on Sunday morning, only to come home empty handed. The host team was much stronger, but everyone was very friendly and the boys enjoyed the trip. Coleraine proved very kind and attentive hosts, which is always appreciated but especially so when such distances are involved.U14 Boys v Coleraine 2018U18 Boys v Ballynafeigh 2018

The U18 Boys, Gabriel Corrigan, Michael Flanigan, Ciaran Flanigan, Joseph Roseingrave and Luke Crawford played at home for the last two weeks, beating Donaghadee and Ballynafeigh respectively. Luke stepped up from the U14 team in Joseph’s place this week, and did himself proud, winning both his matches. This team moved up to Division 2 after a spectacular season last year, when they won their Division, and then went on to take the Challenge Trophy too. They have played 4 of their 5 fixtures and have won all of them so far. Fingers crossed for next week.

U18 Girls v Donaghadee 2018The U18 Girls had a rest last week, but Saturday saw them travelling to Donaghadee for their third fixture. Captained by Anna Torrens, she and teammates Aine Rice, Amelia Burns and Anna Shiel fought valiantly, but after a few tough battles, the host team took the fixture 4-2; but in the fantastic weather, and against a friendly opponent, a good day was had by all.

Seniors this season have been travelling all over the place. Mixed League A team who play in Division 5 have started the season with 2 wins. They travelled to Bangor and then to CIYMS and came home victorious from both matches, having won them both 5 matches to 3. Some very close matches produced excellent tennis, with matches being won and lost on tie-breaks. The night in CIYMS was especially interesting as three of Newcastle’s pairs were parent and child teams. Mixed League B team has not fared so well, having been unable to field a complete team the first week, and then being beaten 5-3 in Whitehead the second week. The fixture in Whitehead was a great night of tennis, however, with some very close matches, and a really lovely friendly supper afterwards.

The Ladies’ Evergreen A team is having a mixed bag, winning and losing, with several fixtures still to go. The Men’s Evergreen team, however, is currently at the top of their Division, having won all of their matches so far, which is fantastic.

The Ladies’ Evergreen B team has not yet won a fixture but is still trying hard and enjoying the experience. With a wing and a prayer they set off for Ballycastle in the pouring rain on Friday night, and ended up chasing the sunshine all the way to the north coast, and spent an idyllic, wind-free evening in the sunshine playing tennis. No better way to start the weekend!
