After a summer of coaching, the standard of play for Newcastle Junior Tournament is noticeably higher, with every level of age and ability performing well. The tournament is always popular, and this year is no exception, with 62 Juniors having entered. All ages and abilities have been represented, from absolute beginners to experienced league players, and from age 5 upwards, everyone is having a go.
The Under 9 age group took to the courts on Saturday morning and played in three different categories. In the beginner category, Patrick Flanigan took the silver medal, and Neasa McNamara took gold. In the intermediate category, Niamh Lowry came a very close second and took the silver, while Freya McKibbin took gold. In the more experienced category, Caelan McNamara played well and took the silver medal, and Tadhg Owens came out on top with the gold. All other participants received a bronze medal. Within each group, it was very clear that everyone was playing at a good standard, and having fun too, which is just as it should be. Refreshments were enjoyed by all, as was the great weather.
